How to Use Reference Images in Krita

A reference is most useful when it helps you make one decision at a time: large shapes, proportion, values, color and detail.

Start with what matters most

Instead of copying every edge, identify the largest visual groups first. A value study is a quick way to check whether the big light-and-shadow relationship is working before you paint details.

Use a clear study order

  1. Block in the major shapes.
  2. Check proportion and angle.
  3. Establish three large value groups.
  4. Add main colors, light and edge detail last.
